A Message from the General Director and Board Chair
Welcome to the one-year anniversary of our triumphant 65th season!...Oh, sorry…we got so swept up in the celebratory spirit of our historic 2024–2025 season that we can’t quite get it out of our system. Truth be told, we don’t want to lose that spirit. As we kick off 2025–2026—our 66th season for those taking notes—we’re keeping the energy, enthusiasm, and most importantly the quality of our presentations at a thrillingly high level. We’re excited to bring Rigoletto back to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre stage for the first time in a decade (a decade, oddly enough, in which it made Operabase’s top-10 list of the most frequently produced operas worldwide). We’re grateful to Pacific Opera Victoria, our co-producer from across the Salish Sea, for partnering with us to bring Verdi’s immortal work to audiences in both cities. This also marks our first production of a Verdi opera since 2019’s La Traviata, and we can’t wait to hear his masterful music again, particularly under the baton of Vancouver Opera Music Director Jacques Lacombe. Stage director Glynis Leyshon (Flight of the Hummingbird) is working with an enormously talented cast, including three notable artists who are making their Vancouver Opera debuts. Baritone Michael Chioldi has made Rigoletto a signature role, having inhabited the cursed jester around the world, including at the Met. Montréal-based soprano Sarah Dufresne is a superstar in the making, leaving rave reviews and goose-bumps in the wake of every performance. And, fresh off debuting in the role with San Francisco Opera, Chinese tenor Yongzhao Yu brings the charismatic and duplicitous Duke of Mantua to life on the QET stage. We’re proud to announce that the Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program will continue to foster emerging opera talent throughout the season. In Rigoletto, Mihnea Nitu, Lyndon Ladeur, Julia LoRusso, and Marianne Bertrand take to the mainstage, while pianist Derek Stanyer joins in the rehearsal hall as Répétiteur. Get used to these names, because you’ll be hearing great things from these artists for years to come! None of this can happen without your support, whether you’re a donor, a season ticket subscriber, or someone that’s just taken your first chance on opera with Rigoletto. Tickets for Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Puccini’s La Bohème are on sale now. Ticket sales only cover a fraction of the costs for our grand-scale performances, and donor support is essential for the continued resilience of our company. In the upcoming season of giving, we hope you can be part of bringing phenomenal opera to Vancouver audiences! For now, let’s enjoy this moment, as we gather together to share one of opera’s most heartbeat-quickening masterpieces! Tom Wright, General Director Krista Johanson, Board Chair
Notes from the Conductor and Director
Notes from the Conductor | Jacques Lacombe
For me, it’s always an incredible pleasure to conduct Verdi’s music. As we all know, he is one of the pillars of the entire operatic repertoire along with Mozart, Wagner, and Puccini. But what I admire the most about him is the impressive evolution he pursued throughout his very long career. Listening back-to-back to one of his early operas such as Nabucco and his final masterpiece, Falstaff (an opera so fresh and filled by such an incredibility youthful energy by a 79 year old man) makes it hard to believe that the same composer wrote these works. Verdi’s large lyrical production is generally divided in three major periods: the early works (including operas such as Nabucco and Macbeth), the middle period (Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and La Traviata) and the late or mature period (with works such as Ballo in maschera, Aïda, Otello and Falstaff, just to name a few). In regards with his middle period, it’s amazing to realize that in a two-year period, Verdi managed to create three masterpieces (all premiered between 1851 and 1853) which count to this day among the most performed and appreciated operas in the entire repertoire! In many ways, Rigoletto was breaking grounds with a lot of traditions inherited from the Bel Canto style of Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. The choice of the subject was already quite an audacious one, made by Verdi and his librettist, Francesco Maria Piave who also wrote many librettos for Verdi, including Macbeth and La Traviata. It’s worth mentioning that the opera is based on a play written by Victor Hugo, Le roi s’amuse which received only one unique performance in Paris in 1832 before being banned by the political authorities. Verdi and Piave also had to face their fair share of problems during the preparation of this opera to be presented at La Fenice, in Venice. The censorship in place at the time showed a strong opposition to presenting such a story, which they considered immoral on stage; a story, which was presenting as the main figure a hunchback, a type of character that would usually be presented in a circus, in a comedy or as a subsidiary role, but never as the “hero” of the story. Featuring a king with immoral behaviours was also not an element to help their cause. Even the original title: “La Maledizione” (the curse) was a problem. As a result, the opera was named “Rigoletto”and as for the king, the character was changed to be an unnamed Duke of Mantua. Musically, Verdi showed also clearly his intentions to adapt his music to the needs of the drama instead of following the traditional structures in practice at the time from the Bel Canto style. As a result, as Verdi himself described it, Rigoletto is almost like a collection of “duets” and he was very proud of the result. Obviously, there are also quite a few beautiful “solo moments” such as the Duke’s songs “Questa o quella” and the famous “La donna è mobile,” not to forget Gilda’s “Caro nome” and Rigoletto’s “Cortigiani.” But one of the most admirable passages of the entire opera is the Act III quartet where Verdi manages to have four contrasting personalities singing at the same time, different emotions in an ensemble with a clarity that as rarely been achieved since Mozart, Gilda painfully understanding the real nature of the man she loved, Rigoletto suffering for his daughter’s loss of innocence, the Duke trying to charm with his high notes Maddalena, a prostitute who laughs at him but not without being attracted to him. It’s really a remarkable musical moment which impressed Victor Hugo himself when he heard the opera. Once asked what he thought was his best opera of the middle period, Verdi answered: “As an amateur, La Traviata, but as a professional, Rigoletto.” In any case, since its premiere, Rigoletto is an opera that has deeply moved generations of opera lovers, amateurs as well as professionals, and I hope that, watching our production of this masterpiece, you’ll agree with Verdi: Rigoletto is one of the best operas ever written.
Notes from the Director | Glynis Leyshon
One of the most rewarding aspects of directing a truly great work like Verdi’s Rigoletto is the challenge of exploring, both musically and narratively, the complexity of human behavior when exposed to situations of extreme psychological duress. Verdi, especially as he reached his creative maturity, was a passionate and astute storyteller capable of providing operas rich in staggering spectacle. But like his great model Shakespeare, his genius ultimately lies in his fearless, and intensely intimate, examination of the human heart. And in his Rigoletto, that exploration leads to a heartbreaking exploration of damaged humanity and the darkness that all too often lies at the heart of human behavior … especially when that behavior is driven by societal structures that demand subservience to the corrupt and often capricious will of an absolute leader. Rigoletto reveals the dark corruption that power exerts over the lives of all struggling for survival in a Darwinian jungle–from an entitled elite and to the poorest of the poor. A golden ‘Duke’ carelessly flaunts his authority over a world that struggles to accommodate his every whim. And Verdi brilliantly reveals to us the human cost of this struggle in the unforgettable figure of Rigoletto. A lowly servant, he struggles to survive in a world where his humanity is relentlessly ridiculed and his only weapon is his rapier sharp wit and his ability to ‘amuse.’ Capable of a passionate and tender love for his beloved daughter Gilda, Rigoletto’s tragedy is that in trying to protect her from a cruel world, he ultimately leads to her destruction. This production places the action in London in 1875 at the height of Queen Victoria’s reign, only a few decades removed from the work’s creation. We have strived to provide our magnificent cast with a setting that firmly sets Verdi’s tragedy at the very epicenter of imperial power and absolutism. We have evoked a world where the elite gather in secrecy to flaunt societal norms … where the dark contrast between rich and poor inherent in the opera are embodied in the stylized world of medieval streets and flickering gaslights. Not a glittering world of glorious excess, but rather a stark and spare world that ruthlessly exposes Rigoletto’s timeless story.
Synopsis
The Story in Short
The jester Rigoletto had long enjoyed the privilege of mocking the Duke of Mantua’s adversaries, but after an offended Count Monterone responds with a curse, and Rigoletto’s beloved daughter Gilda is seduced by the morally corrupt Duke in disguise, Rigoletto hires the assassin Sparafucile to kill the Duke. Sparafucile’s sister/co-conspirator Maddalena lures the Duke into a trap, but is then smitten with him and suggests that her brother spare the Duke, and instead kill the next person that happens along. Overhearing this, a heartbroken Gilda sacrifices herself in place of the Duke. Rigoletto arrives to collect the body of the Duke in a sack, but as he prepares to dump the body in the river, he hears the Duke singing in the distance, and opens the sack to find Gilda, begging her father for forgiveness with her final breath.
Full Synopsis
Act I
At a lavish party he is hosting, an amoral Duke reveals to his courtier Borsa that he has met a sweet young girl in church. She believes him to be an impoverished student, and he means to have her—and any other woman that catches his fancy. He particularly enjoys seducing women in front of their loved ones, as he proceeds to do with Countess Ceprano, knowing that her husband, the seething Count, can do nothing to avenge the dishonour. This insult is compounded by the Duke’s court jester Rigoletto, who mocks the Duke’s victims mercilessly and with absolute impunity, knowing that his boss will protect him from retaliation. The courtier Marullo hurries in with a delicious piece of gossip: Rigoletto has a mistress. The courtiers determine to strike back at the despised court jester. The evening’s festivities are brought to an abrupt stop by the arrival of Count Monterone, the outraged father of a young woman the Duke has debauched and discarded. Rigoletto viciously ridicules Monterone’s grief: in response, the Count hurls a vehement father’s curse at both the Duke (who is unaffected) and the jester (who is profoundly unnerved). Walking home through the dark back streets, Rigoletto is approached by Sparafucile—a self-described “assassin for hire.” The jester declines the assassin’s services—for now. Rigoletto arrives home to visit briefly with his beloved daughter Gilda, whom he has kept sequestered from the world in a convent since the death of her mother until recently bringing her to live with him—thus preserving her innocence, but also making her vulnerable to an outside world she does not really comprehend. In fact, she is the young girl the Duke has met at church, and whom he is wooing under an assumed name—Gaultier Maldé—and an assumed identity—a poor student. The ruse has been successful: Gilda has fallen in love from afar with this apparently ardent and idealistic young man. Of course she dare not tell her father; the young girl’s only guardian during Rigoletto’s frequent absences is her unscrupulous nurse Giovanna, who does not hesitate to accept a bribe from the disguised Duke, who arrives and professes love to the enraptured Gilda. Warned by Giovanna that someone is coming to the house, the Duke leaves, and the courtiers arrive to abduct Rigoletto’s “mistress.” They are interrupted by the jester’s return; he is easily fooled into helping them kidnap “Countess Ceprano,” but the real prey is his own daughter; by the time he comprehends that a trick has been played on him, Gilda has been abducted and taken beyond his protection. The father’s curse!
Act II
The next morning, the Duke is pouting because Gilda has apparently abandoned him. The courtiers arrive with their gift: Rigoletto’s “mistress.” Meanwhile Rigoletto, searching for Gilda, confronts the courtiers, revealing that the girl is not his mistress but his daughter, and begging for their compassion. The courtiers remain unmoved—if anything, this is an even sweeter revenge. Gilda emerges from the Duke’s chambers distraught and dishevelled, but full of compassion for the man for the man she now knows to be the Duke. They are interrupted by Monterone who, on the way to execution, regrets that his curse has had no effect on the Duke and his debauchery. In response Rigoletto swears vengeance on the Duke, both for himself and for Count Monterone.
Act III
Between the second and third acts, Rigoletto has been in contact with Sparafucile, determined as he now is to avenge his daughter and the Count’s. The Duke has been lured to a tavern on the outskirts of the city, occupied by Sparafucile and his sister (and co-conspirator) Maddalena, who is attractive enough to arouse the Duke’s interest and persuasive enough to lure him to the hut. The Duke arrives in high spirits and sings the opera’s most famous number, in which he claims that women are fickle and unreliable, thus justifying his own fickleness and unreliability. Outside the hut, Rigoletto forces his daughter to witness the Duke’s seduction of Maddalena as he professes love with the very same words he once used on Gilda. He orders his heartbroken daughter to flee the city; he will join her the next morning. However, Gilda stays outside the tavern. As a storm begins to rage, Rigoletto and Sparafucile settle on a price to kill the Duke and arrange that Rigoletto will return for the body at midnight. Unfortunately, Maddalena is now intrigued by the Duke, and convinces her brother to spare him, even suggesting that they kill Rigoletto instead. Ultimately they agree that if a stranger comes to the tavern seeking refuge from the storm, they will substitute that victim for the Duke. Overhearing this, Gilda decides to sacrifice her own life, thus she knocks on the door and meets her fate. Rigoletto then returns to collect the Duke’s body. As he prepares to throw the sack containing the corpse into the river, he hears the Duke’s voice in the distance, singing one of the most familiar tunes in all opera. Rigoletto rips open the sack to find Gilda. Struggling to breathe, she begs him to find forgiveness, and promises she will be watching over him in heaven. But with her last breath the Count Monterone’s curse is fulfilled.
