In the Works: An Opera Sprouts Evening

FREE! Date: Thursday, May 7, 2026 Time: 7:30PM Location: Martha Lou Henley Rehearsal Hall (1955 McLean Drive, Vancouver, BC V5N 3J7) Something new is growing — and we want you to hear it before it's finished. Opera Sprouts is a co-production between Vancouver Opera and Pacific Opera Victoria to develop new operas for young audiences in Grades 3–6. Three emerging composer-librettist teams have spent a year developing original works under the mentorship of artists and educators from both companies. On May 7, they share them with you. Each team will speak about their piece, and members of Vancouver Opera's Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program will perform live excerpts right here in our East Van rehearsal space. Come hear what new opera sounds like when it's still becoming itself. The works: Bossy Girl Saves the World — Mishelle Cuttler & Scott Button Howl — Chris Thornborrow & Sarah Henstra How the Tortoise Broke Its Shell — Tawnie Olson & Blessing O. Nwodo
