ABOUT THE SHOW

Premiered in 1985, The Garden of Alice is a delightful exploration of identity and creativity. With its enchanting score and fantastical characters, this opera offers an unforgettable experience, blending storytelling, music, and the magic of live performance. The Garden of Alice follows the curious and adventurous Alice as she tumbles down the rabbit hole into a whimsical world unlike any other. Along her journey, she encounters a host of eccentric characters—the enigmatic Cheshire Cat, the frenzied White Rabbit, the enigmatic Caterpillar, and the formidable Queen of Hearts—each with their own peculiar logic and vivid personalities. The opera captures the essence of Alice's quest for self-discovery, as she navigates surreal landscapes filled with riddles, challenges, and lessons about identity and personal growth. Elizabeth Raum's captivating score enhances the fantastical atmosphere, weaving playful melodies with dramatic undertones that mirror Alice's emotional journey. The opera’s inventive musical language and imaginative staging breathe new life into Carroll's classic tale, making it both accessible and engaging for audiences of all ages. This production promises to be an immersive experience where reality bends, time shifts, and the boundaries of imagination are endlessly explored.

Notes from the Director

The Garden of Alice, inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, is more than just a fantastical journey—it is a story of self-discovery and transformation. "Everything is right and wrong at the same time." — Alice, The Garden of Alice, Raum Composed by Elizabeth Raum with a libretto by her daughter Carolyn Raum, The Garden of Alice is a chamber opera that reimagines Alice’s journey through a more introspective lens. It is especially fitting that we present this work in the Martha Lou Henley Rehearsal Hall—a space dedicated to creative play and imagination. Alice is propelled forward by creative play, using imagination as a means of making sense of an ever-shifting reality. As she tumbles “down the rabbit hole,” she is forced to question truth, authority, and identity. Through surreal encounters and whimsical absurdities, The Garden of Alice reminds us that growing up is not about finding all the answers, but rather about embracing the contradictions along the way. I am incredibly privileged to be working on this production with Vancouver Opera as part of the Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist program. This opportunity for young artists would not exist without the support for this program and the artists involved. A special thanks to Thomas and Jony Lightburn for supporting and putting up with me! You make it possible to be a creative artist here in Vancouver.
